Moments with Jesus
May this new day be calmly past,
may we keep pure while it shall last;
nor let our lips from truth depart,
nor dark designs engage the heart.
–Aurelius Clements Prudentius,
“Sol Ecce Surgit Igneus”, 4th century hymn
Christmas is around the corner, and then it will soon be a New Year full of intentions for change. Oh, how often those resolutions fall flat! Perhaps this is because we tend to focus on correcting a bad habit rather than improving relationships, especially our relationship with God.
The new Catholic daily devotional, Moments with Jesus, is the perfect stocking stuffer for those who want a new or renewed relationship with Jesus. Having the liturgical seasons of the Church embedded within the calendar year (January 1-December 31) means it can be used year after year and never grow old. Over 700 scriptures plus quotes of saints and verses from ancient hymns bring our rich Catholic heritage into each daily meditation. Each month carries a theme which flavors the meditations with the seasons of nature and the seasons of our life:
Wintery January brings the warmth of His love while encouraging commitment to prayer with Him.
February bridges late winter into early spring as we transition into Lent, then following Jesus in His public ministry and passion throughout March.
April is time of new growth and Easter resurrection which leads to Pentecostal discipleship in May.
The Sacred Heart of Jesus and His Precious Blood are kept close to our hearts in June and July. The August conversations with Jesus are informed by the Beatitudes and Virtues to help our hearts grow in perfection like our Blessed Mother’s Immaculate Heart.
With the end of summer vacation, people return to work and school in September as we reflect upon the holiness of our labors.
October is Respect Life month, and the subject of conversations with Jesus range from conception to natural death. The Triduum of All Hallow’s Eve, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day then transitions us into November. In keeping with the Church’s liturgy, we reflect upon Heaven, Hell, and the final judgement as Jesus reminds us of His desire for us to spend eternity with Him.
Advent brings the new liturgical year for the Church while at the same time the calendar year draws into a wintery close. In December we embrace our littleness as we await the Christ Child to arrive.
“And He who had only a Father now had a Mother too.” (St. John of the Cross)
